-
- No, why would it? You use a cheap shell account. Mlink gives you both TCP/IP
- and AS-225 connections. There's no need to setup AmiTCP or INET-225, or
- anything like that. You just need to have AmiTCP Installed on your system,
- and have it assigned. There's no screwing with the socket.library. You can
- pretty much use any TCP/IP or AS-225 out there for the Amiga. You can use any
- program that will Dial onto your ISP, and if you can script it all the better.
- Once your on, quit the term program, click on mlink from the Amiga and your
- linked. There's really no SLIP/PPP type of thing between you and your ISP,
- it's more of a Zmodem protical, and it can be faster then a real SLIP/CSLIP/
- or PPP connection because of that.
-
- There are times when you don't want to use mlink, or even tia or slirp. I
- used to use mlink, I'm using TIA now myself. Some ISP's may not offer shell
- accounts you you can use none of them. Some like my ISP don't allow mlink, or
- even SLIRP, but just TIA for people with Shell accounts. I Found that out at
- a later date. There are a few things you can't do like ping. If your computer
- is going to be a server, well a real PPP/SLIP type connection is better.
-
- My shell account is $17.50 a month for unlimited hours, 5 Megs of HD Space, a
- 28.8k connection local Number. FULL Internet access.
-
- I think SLIP/PPP connections are like $24.50 a month, with 8 hours a day
- access anything more Extra, NO Hard Drive Space. It's pretty good acually.
- But if I ever want to put up a web page, Since I would have No Hard Drive
- space on there system with this option, I would have to spend more money to
- either get a shell account ALSO, or I think there's some other option also,
- but I would then have to telnet in. Whatever the case it's even more money,
- and harder to access.
-
- There's also another GOOD reson going with a shell account! My ISP is CRL and
- they have access numbers all over the state and across the country. If I
- don't happen to be home, I'm away someplace and don't have my Amiga, not like
- it's very porable, but have access to some other computer and any old Terminal
- program, I can still get onto my ISP without any problems and do anything I
- need, E-Mail, Newsgroup, IRC, Telnet, WWW whatever all from the Shell account
- and any old computer. All I need is a phone number, and my logon name and
- password. I can go over to my brother house to his PowerMAC or a friends PC,
- and grab files for them. May not be as fancy, but it's fast and gets the job
- done anyway.
